Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

Distance:
Location: 4.5 hours from New Delhi.
50 Km from Agra.
Time of visit: November to February

The Keoladeo National Park or Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary in Rajasthan, is 50 Km from Agra. The park is 250 years old and is named after the Shiva temple, built in it precincts.
It is approximately 30 sq km in area of which about 11 sq km isd marshes.

A trip to the Bharatpur did not seem particularly exciting. However we were in for a surprise.

We checked into a Hotel close to the Sanctuary. Owing to the proximity, we were able to reach the sanctuary by sixs in the morning. Motor vehicle are not allowed in. So we could either walk or we had a choice of mundane vehicles to choose from - a Tonga, Cycles or Rickshaws. We decided to take the Tonga.

Though much have been written about the variety of birds that descend on this place the experience of traveling in the Tonga in the cold winter morning looking for birds was fun. There were a bewildering variety of birds.

You can alight from the Tonga and walk along a narrow path that takes you deep into the sanctuary. It is safe.

We saw hundreds of water fowls in one of the lakes. Suddenly all of them took off into the air. The sight and sound was startling. It sounded like a dozen trucks starting up at the same time!

There are large stretches of water bodies where you can hire a boat for an exploratory ride. It takes you into the interiors of the marshy land for bird watching. If you are lucky you might spot a python basking in the sun.
Well worth a visit over the weekend from Delhi.

Snippet

There are over 1200 species of bird in the India Region out of a total of 8650 species found world wide. If we were to add the sub species of birds the number would add up to over 2000 which would be more than the number of birds found in Europe and North America।

Shall we, dear....?????
