A cloak and dagger tale of a glacial lake-Roopkand.

Situated at 5, 029 meters in a windswept desolate landscape the Roopkand lake lies serenly at the base of the Trishul masiff. At a distance the lake appears like any other filled with accumulated waters from the melting glaciers. Comer closer and the depths reveal a macabre scene of skeletons of humans and animals- almost 300 of them!

The corpses have been lying submerged for centuries. The local people staying at lower levels can only offer mythical explanations.

Were they pilgrims who were caught unaware in a deadly blizzard? Or was it a vindictive action by a chieftain who unleashed his murderous fury on  a hapless group of people refusing to kowtow to his demands? Whatever may be reason, the truth till today remain hidden in the mists of time that remain suspended over this lake.

Its a 2 day punishing bone-cracking trek through a varied landscape of meadows and unforgiving jagged terrain. For more details regarding the trek have a look at this link- Roopkand
