Tabo in the Spiti Valley is a world heritage site famous for the Tabo Gompa or the Buddhist Monastery dating back to the 10th century AD.

Near the Gompas are the little known Tabo Caves, which according to historian predates the Tabo Monasteries. Perched on the sunny side of the mountains the caves served as a habitat for the monks. The caves are of different sizes. The biggest of the caves can accommodate about 20 persons. The caves then and now are used by monks for meditation.
